Chiropractic is safe, gentle and unbelievably effective and the 3rd largest health-care system in the world.
The nervous system is known as the “master control system”, controlling EVERYTHING that happens in the body. Interference to the nervous system caused by misalignments of the spine (known as a vertebral subluxation) significantly robs the body of its ability to function at 100%, and is the cause of many common health conditions people suffer from every day.
By realigning the spine, chiropractic allows the body to function free from interference, just as nature designed. The body requires no help, just no interference.
Just like we go to the dentist for regular check-ups, everyone should get his/her spine checked. Less than 10% of your nervous system perceives pain, the other 90% is responsible for allowing your body function properly; it is possible to have nerve interference and feel perfectly healthy. How you feel is a poor judge of your health. By the time symptoms appear, many spinal problems are advanced. Chiropractic focuses on correcting the underlying cause of the problem (vertebral subluxations) and showing you ways to keep from recreating the same problems in the future.
A vertebral subluxation is a condition where the spine shifts out of it’s nice healthy position, placing damaging stress on the nerves, the spinal cord, the discs and the vertebrae, causing dysfunction, and in some cases pain. Left uncorrected, it can lead to degeneration (wear and tear) of the spine and a lifetime of poor health. This is because pressure on the nervous system is just like putting a kink in a hose – if there is pressure on the nerves the body cannot function and heal at optimal levels.
A physical stress such as a fall, injury, sudden jar, trauma, or sometimes an inherited spinal weakness can cause the spine to shift out of its nice healthy position. Other causes include improper sleeping conditions or habits, poor posture, occupational hazards, repetitive strain via computer use or TV watching, incorrect lifting practices, obesity, lack of rest and exercise, and stress. Even emotional factors such as stressful relationships or workplaces, and chemical factors such as poor diet or exposure to toxins (such as cigarettes or alcohol) are frequent causes of subluxation. The birth process itself, for both the mum and baby is also a common cause of subluxation. Subluxation can occur to any one of any age – this is why we specialize in care for the entire family at Casuarina Chiropractic.
Through gentle adjustments, Chiropractor’s help to restore the spine to its nice healthy position so the nervous system can function and heal at its full potential. Where necessary, we also prescribe specific exercises and traction to be completed at home to help you get the maximum benefit from your adjustments, and minimize the effects of repetitive activities on their spine and nervous system.
Dr Jane has a range of different techniques, which enables her to safely take care of people of all ages, from babies to the elderly. She utilizes manual techniques, which are what chiropractic was founded on, and more modernized techniques, which use the assistance of a drop table, and other specialized adjusting instruments such as an Activator. The type of care that we give is determined by both the patient’s preference and the condition of their spine. Some of the techniques are so gentle that even babies and those who have advanced osteoporosis are able to have chiropractic care.
Absolutely! At Casuarina Chiropractic we check many babies and children to ensure that their spines are growing healthy, straight and strong. Our practice members range from just days old, to those in their nineties. Regardless of age, the vertebrae can become misaligned, and this can disturb the delicate spinal cord and nerves, which control the youngster's muscles and organs.
The birth process is often the cause of the very first subluxation, and in a study of births requiring intervention by a Doctor (such as forceps, induction or excessive force) 95% sustained upper neck injuries. And the average child’s life isn’t exactly stress free – the average 5 year old has had approximately 2000 falls, of which 200 are considered serious – all of these minor (and sometimes major) traumas have a compounding effect.
Many childhood conditions such as ADD, asthma, ear infections, growing pains, scoliosis, recurrent colds and flu can be caused by misalignments of the spine, and many spinal problems found in adults could have been prevented had they taken care of their spine and nervous system from a young age. An early chiropractic check-up may detect many spinal problems while they are still easily correctable, and could be one of the most valuable gifts a parent could give their child.
We see many pregnant women at Casuarina Chiropractic. Chiropractic care can make for a more comfortable pregnancy and labour. Because of the additional weight and stress on the framework of the body, chiropractic adjustments can help lower the incidence of pain in the low back and legs, and between the shoulder blades.
Chiropractic care is also important for the pregnant woman to ensure the spine and pelvis is well aligned for a smooth delivery process.
Negative pressure is created within the discs by providing a series of slow pulls, holds and releases. Over time, this vacuum effect may in many cases help the bulging disc material to be ‘drawn back into place’.
The fibres in the outer ring of the disc are also helped to heal by the increased nutrients which circulate in the area due to the gentle pumping movement created around the disc and facet joints.
Once your spinal level and treatment type has been prescribed for you, you will receive a specific treatment program with gradual adjustments as we make progress with your spine.
You stay fully clothed, and can relax on the decompression table in a quiet room with relaxing music.
Your exact requirements will be entered into the computer, you will be comfortably strapped in, the program will begin and you will be left in peace to relax for 20 -26 minutes while your spine decompresses in exactly the way you need it to.
Traction does not provide the special logarithmic movement, systematically increasing and decreasing the decompression in the way that the Hill DT table does.
This cycle of movement is a critical part of the success of this therapy, as it brings the essential oxygen and nutrients to the area to help it heal.
A common side effect of traditional traction therapy is muscle splinting and guarding during treatment, impeding decompression. The Hill DT table does not allow your muscles to splint or guard as the seven sensors on the table are continually monitoring the muscles in the target area, maximizing decompression without side effects.
Spinal Decompression is best used in conjunction with your regular Chiropractic fuller to maximise results and bring about fuller healing of your spine.
However, if you have not received results from previous Chiropractic care then you may well find this new type of treatment will likely be able to help, showing you a whole new way forward with this style of Chiropractic specific for disc and arthritis issues.
Typically, it takes around 8-12 weeks for a disc to heal with decompression therapy.
To achieve the best possible result, 20-30 treatments over 2-3 months are usually required.
The fee for your initial consultation is $99, which will allow us to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for spinal decompression therapy.
Although this treatment is relatively new to Australia, it is quite common in the US, UK and parts of Europe, with a reported success rate of 86%.
However, results can never be promised and you may still require surgery. We will monitor your progress and refer you to your doctor should you/we not be happy with your progress.
Some people do feel a change after just one or two sessions, others after about 5-8 sessions, and others not until their 20th or 25th session.
It all depends on how much inflammation you have, how long you have had the problem, how severe the problem is, and how well you follow our guidelines regarding nutrition, supplements and activities.
Each case is different and we can give no guarantees regarding results or time frames as to how long you may take to get better.
There are a few circumstances which may prevent you from being a candidate for decompression therapy. Some of these reasons include if you weigh over 155kg, are pregnant (for lower back treatments) have severe vascular disease or severe osteoporosis.
If you have previously had spinal surgery, spinal decompression therapy is often still appropriate - this is depending on the type of surgery, provided the procedure was not within the previous six months (to allow for complete healing) and there are no surgical implants at the level being treated.
Your case will be assessed and if we need to seek approval from your medical specialist then we will not start care until you have been given clearance by them.
At your initial consultation our Chiropractor will conduct a Decompression Assessment. It is important that you provide any X-rays and scans that have been taken. You will need to allow 30 mins for this visit.
During your visit we will assess your case, perform a detailed neurological and orthopaedic examination, and refer you for further testing if required.
If we do not think that your case is suitable for decompression therapy we will refer you to your GP or another health professional for a different approach to pain relief for you.
